Familias En Accion is a grassroots group of Northfield educators and community members who joined together five years ago with the shared vision that our Latino children could be more successful in our schools. We were troubled by the high dropout rates of these children and reports that Latino children and families did not always feel welcomed or supported in schools. The mission of Familias En Accion is "to promote a learning environment for Latino students in Northfield schools that encourages personal and academic successes."
We have begun to work towards our mission by hosting events to bring families into the schools, providing sessions on helping their children, organizing a Spanish PTO, holding postsecondary options fairs, and sponsoring field trips to nearby colleges.
Familias also partners with the Northfield Public Schools on the Tackling Obstacles and Raising College Hopes (TORCH) graduation initiative. The goal of TORCH is to double the Latino graduation rate in the Northfield schools. TORCH assists middle school and high school students with: academic support; after school and summer enrichment opportunities; and college searches, applications and scholarships. |
