Skateboarding Coalition meets challenge grant!

Congratulations to the Northfield Skateboard Coalition for reaching the $10,000 challenge grant from HCI. In October 2007, HCI pledged to match – dollar-for-dollar – any money the youth in the Skateboard Coalition raised before April 1, 2008, up to a maximum of $10,000.

The young people in the Skateboard Coalition raised over $10,500 during that time. Thus, HCI will contribute the full $10,000 to support the youth-led effort to build a skateboard plaza in Northfield.

Thank you to everyone who contributed! Even though the challenge grant is complete, the youth continue to raise funds for the plaza, as additional monies will be needed for this project. Please consider sending a donation to the Northfield Union of Youth, P.O. Box 481, Northfield, MN 55057. Checks can be made out to the Northfield Union of Youth – please write “Skateboard Coalition” in the memo line. Donations are tax-deductible.

Video on Northfield youth development efforts available online

The Minnesota Alliance With Youth recently created a video profiling youth development efforts in Northfield. The video features three Northfield High School juniors and a number of youth organizations, including the Northfield Union of Youth, Mayor's Youth Council, and Tackling Obstacles and Raising College Hopes (TORCH) program.

The video was shown at the Minnesota Summit of Youth Development and Graduation, attended by more than 500 people in December.  It is now used by the Minnesota Alliance with Youth in trainings across the state.

The video can be seen on YouTube -- because of its length, it is divided into two parts,

Today, Northfield was named as one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People" by the national America's Promise organization.

The 15 high school students in the Northfield Mayor's Youth Council wrote and submitted the application this fall. Northfield was selected from more than 750 applications nationwide -- and one of the only submitted applications written by youth themselves!
