The youth asset-building mission of the Healthy Community Initiative (HCI) is "to promote an environment that strengthens the networks of support that will nurture competent, caring and principled youth." HCI is one of two lead agencies for the Rice County Chemical Health Coalition. This coalition is implementing the "Rice County Plan to Reduce Youth Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use." In addition to its work with Rice County Health Coalition, HCI also supports the following coalitions concerned with healthy youth development.

  • Parent Education and Resource Liaisons - parent volunteers at each Northfield school that serve as resources to other parents, answering questions and coordinating parent education opportunities.
  • Northfield Mentoring Coalition - collaboration of local mentoring programs, committed to
finding positive adult mentors for Northfield youth.
  • Familias en Accion - grassroots coalition working to support Northfield's Latino students and famililes by hosting events to bring families into the schools, providing educational support, and holding postsecondary options fairs and college trips.
  • Parent Communication Network - parent education initiative to foster communication between parents and to help parents develop good parenting skills.
  • Youth Plus - an intergenerational group whose mission is to increase positive interactions between Northfield youth and adults.

HCI also provides mini-grants to support intergenerational and chemical-free events, and financially supports the Northfield Middle School Youth Center (an after school center for youth in grades 6-8)
